What are peptides – and why are they important for skincare?

Peptides

Chances are you’ve heard this word floating around in the world of skincare, but aren’t too sure what it means, or why you need to make them a part of your routine.

While you might not completely understand what peptides are (yet!) or how they work, they are an essential addition to many effective products that combat against common signs of maturing skin, such as:

  • Fine lines
  • Thinning skin
  • Lack of buoyancy or suppleness
  • Dryness

So how exactly do peptides help with these common skin concerns? Let’s take a look!

What are Peptides?

In its most basic explanation, peptides are amino acid chains that serve as building blocks for protein in the body.

Protein is a major part of what makes up the skin, tissues and organs throughout the body. Collagen is one such vital protein – in fact, between 75 and 80 percent of the skin is made up of collagen. Peptides actually help produce collagen, a protein crucial to keeping skin healthy and supple. The natural aging process can decrease the body’s ability to maintain ample collagen levels. This can lead to the development of fine lines, loss of skin firmness and thinning skin. Sound hopeless? It’s not. Keep reading.

Peptides and Skincare

One way to fight back against the natural decline of collagen is to choose skincare products that are packed full of peptides and other skin-friendly ingredients.

Essentially, when you apply peptides to the skin topically, you’re giving cells the hint that it needs to do better in the collagen production department – thus prompting skin cells to develop collagen for areas that need it the most.

How to Use Peptides in a Skincare Routine

With Sanitas Skincare, incorporating peptides into a skincare routine is as simple as adding a serum with your daily moisturizer, or adding an eye cream to help reduce fine lines that typically develop around the eye’s thin and delicate skin.

PeptiDerm Firming Serum contains a multiplex of peptides, all of which work together to increase the skin’s elasticity and firmness. In addition to reducing the appearance of fine lines, the Firming Serum also protects the skin against environmental factors that speed up the aging process! Simply smooth a dropper full of serum to the entire face, neck and decollete, then follow up with your favorite hydrating moisturizer.

For those with mature skin or if you find that your skin is losing firmness, PeptiDerm Moisturizing Cream is packed full of beneficial peptides and other hydrating ingredients to provide skin a healthy and supple texture. This moisturizing cream also infuses plenty of moisture and oxygen to fight back against dryness and give your skin a radiant glow.

5 Questions About Glycolic Acid – Answered

Glycolic acid has been a skincare rockstar for decades due to its unparalleled ability to kick skin cell turnover into high gear and increase the efficacy of other active ingredients. But despite its nearly towering status in the world of skincare, certain misconceptions still abound.

Sanitas experts weigh in on some common questions about glycolics and happily explain how to get the most benefit from this highly transformative, yet often times misunderstood, skincare staple.

QUESTION |

Why does glycolic acid dry my skin out and make it all flaky?

A:

OK, we hear this one a lot. The first thing to consider is that not all glycolic formulas are created equal. There is a world of difference between a buffered AHA and an unbuffered AHA, which is critical when it comes to minimizing irritation and sensitivity.

For example, combining glycolic acid with amino acids such as glycine and arginine form complexes that prolong the release of free acid, which in turn, helps reduce irritation and extend exfoliating benefits.

In addition, adding a powerful humectant, such as sodium PCA, further binds moisture to skin cells and protects the acid mantle, reducing inflammation, preventing irritation and actually increasing hydration levels.

End result? Don’t give up yet. What your flaky, dry skin might need most is as simple as a correctly designed formula that delivers glycolic acid’s coveted benefits with minimal unwanted side effects.

Frequency is also a common culprit. If you’re experiencing redness and irritation, it might be time to step back and reevaluate your program. The skin needs time to respond and rebuild post-stimulation. Think of this as an evolving process and check in with your skin regularly. Light shedding and pinkness means you’re on track. Excessively flaking, red skin plus sensitivities means it’s time to slow your roll and give your skin a break.

QUESTION |

Isn’t glycolic acid just for aging skin?

A:

Absolutely not! Glycolic acid can be a powerful part of a skincare program that actually helps prevent signs of aging. Collagen and elastin are an integral part of the support structure of the skin and determine how firm and smooth it appears. Since robust production of these important connective tissues begins to slow in your early 30s, using AHAs sooner rather than later can help to proactively strengthen and support the structure of your skin. Bonus points go to glycolic acid’s ability to help even skin tone and fight signs of UV inflicted photo-damage.

QUESTION |

How often should I be using glycolics?

A:

Every other day, and we’ll tell you why.

Glycolic acid needs to be used mindfully in conjunction with nourishing ingredients such as vitamin c and hyaluronic acid. The goal with AHAs is to push the skin to become stronger but also allow to it fully recover and rebuild. What you use between treatments is just as important as the treatment itself.

And while we are talking about when and how often, let’s also touch on a few non-negotiables. When using any type of AHA, you must use a full spectrum sun block to protect your brand new, freshly exfoliated and emerging skin cells from environmental damage such as pollution and UV rays. This means every day, year round, no matter how much time you think you actually spend in the sun. Those UVA rays are going to hunt you down and find you so make sure you are safeguarding and protecting your skin at all times.

QUESTION |

How do I use glycolic acid with other active ingredients?

A:

This can get a little deep depending on how many other actives are part of your program, but let’s take a look at a few possible scenarios. We’ll walk you through it.

QUESTION |

I’ve been using AHAs for a while. How do I know it’s time to step up my game and go for a stronger formulation?

A:

Pretty much the same way you know when it’s time to add more weight to your bicep curls, extend your runs or hold your plank longer. If you are no longer seeing results from the same routine, it’s time to take it to the next level. Ramping up your AHA use through progressive formulations is one of the cornerstones of our ingredient philosophy which is why we offer our GlycoSolutions in three ascending strengths ranging from 5% to 15%.

Meet your new besties: Age-defying Actives

All About Age-Defying Actives

If you’re looking forward to the grace, wisdom and understanding that comes with age, but not the wrinkles, dark spots and sagging skin, we have some friends you’ll want to meet! Each of these age-defying active ingredients works with your body’s natural processes to help you minimize the visible signs of aging and enjoy the experience of aging well. We think that’s a truly beautiful thing!

Vitamin C

This potent and effective antioxidant is one ingredient estheticians and dermatologists recommend to reduce signs of aging or sun damage. This powerful active helps boost your collagen production too, which can plump your skin and minimize fine lines.

We feature vitamin C in many of our formulations. Vita C Serum and Topical C are two of our bestselling favorites.

Peptides

Peptides are your body’s way of asking for the collagen it needs to keep your skin firm, smooth and healthy looking. As we age, peptide production lessens and so does that much needed supply of collagen. You can help your body out by choosing skincare loaded with age-defying peptides. They’ll help keep your collagen supply going and your skin glowing!

Our PeptiDerm collection includes high concentrations of top quality peptides. Whether you pick and choose or create a routine using them together, we think you’ll be amazed by your results.

Hyaluronic Acid

Your body makes hyaluronic acid to help keep your skin and connective tissue hydrated and healthy. As time passes this production lessens and we can start to notice drier skin. Hyaluronic acid, whether produced by your body or found in your skincare, holds an astounding amount of water.  When applied to the skin, it helps cells stay well hydrated and healthy like they did when you were younger.

Our Hyaluronic Concentrate is a great source of Hyaluronic Acid. Use it before your favorite moisturizer or mix them together in the palm of your hand before applying.

Vitamin A

Retinol, a type of Vitamin A, offers a whole host of benefits with continued use. These include increased collagen levels, restored thickness to the skin and protection against environmental damage. For age-defense, it’s simply a must.

If you’re ready for retinol, consider working RejuvenA into your weekly skincare regimen. As it exfoliates it gives your skin ceramides, antioxidant vitamins, amino acids and hyaluronic acid. These clean beauty actives help reduce irritation, increase skin renewal and reveal your healthiest, most luminous skin.

What’s your favorite age-defense product? Post and tag your pic using #skinbysanitas to let us know!

Sidebar: At Sanitas Skincare, we take active ingredients seriously. That’s why our products are full of them. When you buy from us you’re saying no thanks to fillers, fragrances, coloring and other drama. Don’t worry. You’ll be so in love with your results, you’ll never miss them anyway!

To find out what causes dry skin, check out our comprehensive blog here.

How to Create the Perfect Dry Skincare Routine

The best skincare routine for dry skin is applied twice daily: morning and evening. If you have been applying the same products at first light as you do at night, we hate to break it to you but you’re not getting the most of your routine. Of course, there are a couple of products that can and should do double duty, but most products are effective with only one use per day or even one use per week. Divide your skincare products between morning and night and conquer dry skin for good.

I. In the Morning

Step 1: Cleanse

Nothing starts the day off right like a fresh splash of water on the face, and if you have dry skin, or it’s feeling extra dry on a certain day, that may be all the cleansing you need. Overwashing can strip your skin of its natural oils, which, when skin is already dry, can cause it to become irritated. Plus, if you follow the nighttime skincare routine for dry skin below, then there’s really no need to wash away all those wonderful ingredients come morning.

If you can’t let go of your morning cleanse, just make sure to use a gentle formula such as our  Milk & Honey Cleanser. Additionally, if you are prone to breakouts, you can consider making cleansing in the morning a regular part of your routine.

Step 2: Serum

Step two (or one if you skipped the cleanse) is applying a serum. A serum is the part of your daily skincare routine packed with powerful ingredients, so this step shouldn’t be skipped. For dry skin, a hydrating serum is essential. Thankfully, a lot of hydrating serums also boast other great benefits. Natural Moisture Factor is the perfect addition to any dry skincare routine as it will dramatically increase skin’s moisture and leave it smoother and brighter too.

Step 3: Moisturize

Lock in all the benefits of your serum and deliver even more hydration to dry skin with a balm or moisturizer. Our PeptiDerm Moisturizing Cream is the ideal moisturizer for dry skin because it nourishes even severely dry skin. This product is perfect for the daytime and is a great example of how we utilize an entourage of ingredients to deliver maximum benefits, allowing you to use fewer products overall.

Step 4: Protect

The final step in your morning skincare routine may be the most important. It’s sunscreen. We’re sure we aren’t the first to tell you the importance of using SPF every single day. This is the single best ingredient to prevent signs of aging and skin cancer. Layer a facial sunscreen such as our Solar Block Broad Spectrum Sunscreen over your hydrating moisturizer. If you can, reapply sunscreen throughout the day to ensure you are always protected. Now, you and your skin are ready to go.

II. In the Evening

Step 1: Cleanse

The perfect nighttime routine begins with a good cleanse. Take the day off so your dehydrated skin can breathe and recover while you sleep. For the first cleanse of the night, use a formula that will easily dissolve and remove any makeup. Our Sensitive Skin Cleanser does just that.

Step 2: Cleanse
Again

You read that right. If your day is filled with makeup, phone calls, workouts, and more, there are a lot more impurities on your face than you can do away within one simple wash. These impurities can lead to clogged pores which can lead to breakouts and a dull complexion. Rid your skin of any remaining impurities and supply extra hydration with our Milk & Honey Cleanser. It is formulated with rich, hydrating honey and milk proteins that lock in moisture.

Step 3: Exfoliate

Exfoliating is a necessary step to clear the skin of dead skin cells, prevent clogged pores, and achieve a brighter complexion. For dry skin specifically, exfoliating can help rid the skin of any flakes and even any rough patches. Exfoliating does remove the top layer, or layers, of the skin so it is important not to do it very often. Protect the skin barrier, which allows skin to retain moisture, by only exfoliating a few nights per week.

One to two times a week, exfoliate your skin with a facial polish such as our Lemon Cream Scrub. This scrub will buff away spent skin cells and restore a lackluster complexion. On the other nights of the week, opt for a gentle resurfacing treatment such as our Hydrating Brightening Solution. This formula can be used three to four times per week on dry skin to brighten age spots, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fortify the skin’s defense against environmental aggressors. This solution contains alpha hydroxy acid, an ingredient that can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, which is why we suggest using it as part of your nighttime routine.

Both of these products are gentle enough to use on dry sensitive skin, but if exfoliators ever begin to irritate your skin or exacerbate dryness, simply decrease how often you use them.

Step 4: Mask

This step is crucial for anyone with dry skin. In fact, a powerful hydrating mask can be the biggest help when it comes to battling chronic dryness and/or a sudden onset of dryness. After exfoliating, apply our VitaRich Mask to your face and neck and leave it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing. This mask will deliver deep hydration to replenish dry, dull skin for immediate results.

Tip: You can always mask in the morning too if your skin is feeling extra thirsty.

Step 5: Serum

Applying serum is one of those steps that happens both in the morning and at night. Reach for Natural Moisture Factor once again to supply your skin with much needed moisture as well as a powerful host of nutrients that will leave it looking better and brighter.

Step 6: Moisturize

Complete your skincare routine for dry skin with moisturizer. At night, feel free to up the thickness of your moisturizer based on how your skin is feeling. If it seems drier than usual because you used a more powerful exfoliant, you’re traveling, or the weather is changing, opt for a richer moisturizer such as our PeptiDerm Moisturizing Cream.

That wasn’t so bad now, was it? A good, daily skincare routine such as this one will ensure your dry skin is properly nourished and looks and feels its best. With just a few simple steps in the morning and at night, you can have glowy-looking, radiant skin both now and in the future. Everyone’s skin is unique so use this routine as a framework and select the products that target your skin type and major concerns to fill in the blanks. At Sanitas Skincare, you can shop the best products for dry skin and easily find the dryness specific formulas that are right for you.

How To Treat Dry Skin

In order for skin to be healthy and look and feel its best, it needs moisture. When skin lacks moisture it can appear dry, crackly, flaky, red, or all of the above, but there are some less noticeable signs too such as congestion, tightness, and dullness. Everyone has encountered these unfortunate side effects at some point in time; dry skin doesn’t discriminate. So, what causes dry skin? It can arise out of nowhere as a result of a myriad of causes from things we can’t control such as the weather outside and the hardness or softness of our water, to things we can (sort of) control such as how many cups of coffee we consume and how high we turn up the thermostat. All that to say, escaping dry and sensitive skin is not a task for the faint at heart.

So, if we’re all bound to encounter this condition at one time or another, or every year when winter rolls around, what can we do to prepare for and treat it? Here, we’ll show you how to treat dry skin with ultra-hydrating products. When you incorporate these five hydrating products into your skincare routine for dry skin, you’ll notice a significant improvement in your symptoms, and when you stick to using them regularly, you will see a dramatic difference in the condition of your skin. Say goodbye to sensitive, itchy skin and hello to a vibrant, dewy complexion.

5 Hydrating Products to Reverse Dry Skin

1

A Daily Hydrating Serum

A hydrating serum can deliver potent nutrients to your skin cells beneath the surface. There are two types of serums we recommend; one to deliver the nutrients your skin needs, and another to help it hold onto those nutrients. We suggest using our Natural Moisture Factor and Hyaluronic Concentrate in tandem. The first contains nutrients and botanicals proven to improve the skin’s moisture and renewal, while the second contains hyaluronic acid to increase the skin’s ability to retain moisture.

2

Exfoliant

If dry patches or congestion are the main symptoms showing up for you, you may not be exfoliating enough. As new skin cells regenerate, old skin cells die off and can get stuck on the skin’s surface. Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells, which can reduce dry patches and improve the skin’s overall texture. Use an exfoliant with AHAs such as our Hydrating Brightening Solution, which is gentle enough to use 3-4 times a week. The lactic acid (an AHA) it’s formulated with will help dissolve dead skin cells on the surface so hydrating products can penetrate the pores beneath them easier. The result? Less congestion and dry patches, and more hydrated skin.

3

A Moisture-Rich Mask

A hydrating mask is a must if you have dry and sensitive skin. Traditionally, masks are a 15-20 minute treatment you wash away, and while that is effective for regular use, you can also leave some hydrating masks on overnight. An overnight mask will help lock in all of the hydration you add earlier in your skincare routine and ensure no moisture escapes while you sleep. Try our VitaRich Mask for a quick facial, or for a hydrating overnight solution. It’s full of essential fatty acids and vitamins that will leave healthy skin soft and smooth.

4

A Heavy-Duty Moisturizer

Your typical moisturizer isn’t a match for the dark winter months when the icy cold outside and the hot, dry air inside are out to get you. Lather on a thicker moisturizing cream to wage war against the elements effectively. Thickness isn’t all that matters in a moisturizer though, the ingredients do too. For great results, select a formula rich with peptides and ceramides that soothe and repair skin.  Our PeptiDerm Moisturizing Cream is just what you need. This ultra-rich cream slathers on beautifully to provide immediate relief. Plus, it is formulated with peptides and ceramides, which help support the skin’s natural barrier so it can heal itself.

5

Moisture Mist

Morning and night aren’t the only times it’s necessary to supply skin with moisture. If you have dry skin, don’t let the day go by without applying additional moisture throughout the day. A quick spritz with Moisture Mist will help soften and smooth dehydrated skin anywhere, anytime.

How To Apply Products for Dry Skin

The products you use are important, but so is how you use them. Follow the order of operations for skincare and work from the thinnest product to the thickest product. Given the recommendations we made above, a proper dry skincare routine would look like this: cleanse, mask, mist, apply serum and hyaluronic acid (maybe mix them in your palm as a cocktail?) and then lather on moisturizer. On nights where you want a more deeply hydrating treatment, apply the mask last and let it sink in overnight.

Timing is important too. Your skin is more ready to receive hydration right after you shower, take a bath or wash your face, so don’t hesitate in applying the best products for dry skin after cleansing. This way, your skin can make the most of the nourishing and hydrating products it craves.

All About Dehydrated Skin

Healthy skin is hydrated skin. When skin is properly hydrated, it looks, feels, and performs better. That means it feels soft, supple, and is less prone to breakouts, wrinkles, dark circles, and dry patches. So, how do you know if your skin is hydrated? Well, if you have a dewy, fresh-faced, and clear complexion, it probably is… but if you find your skin lacking in any of these areas, it could be in need of hydration. Addressing this is a crucial first step to getting it back on track.

How to Tell If Your Skin is Dehydrated & What to Do About It

The Difference Between Dry and Dehydrated Skin

You are probably familiar with the typical “skin types”, which are based on the natural, genetic condition of skin. There is oily skin, dry skin, and combination skin. You can usually easily tell which category your skin falls into by the way it generally looks and feels.

Dry skin is defined by fewer oil glands that cause inadequate production of natural oils, making the skin look and feel dry most of the time.

Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is a skin condition that can plague any skin type.

So, what causes dry skin? While your skin type is determined by the amount of oil your skin produces, its hydration level is determined by how much water it is holding on to at any given time. How hydrated your skin is changes on a day to day and even hourly basis, and is easily affected by factors such as the weather, diet, caffeine and alcohol consumption, environment, skincare regimen and so on.

Although you can’t change your skin type, you can change how hydrated your skin is. It’s important to build healthy habits and routines that keep your skin regularly hydrated, however skin is still likely to become dehydrated now and then. Pay careful attention to the symptoms of dehydrated skin so you can act quickly to combat them and see the return of plump, radiant skin sooner rather than later.

Symptoms of Dehydrated Skin

Chapped Lips

Our lips are one of the first parts of our body to show signs of dryness, and if they’re thirsty, the rest of your skin probably is too. If you’re experiencing dry lips or dry mouth, you need to supply your skin, lips, and body with hydration stat.

Tightness

Anyone who has experienced dehydrated skin anywhere on their body knows the tight feeling it causes. If your face ever feels pulled taut, it’s likely dehydrated. In winter, especially, this is a common symptom because the cold, low-humidity air pulls moisture out of the skin and tightens pores.

Wrinkles

We wish wrinkles were only the result of dehydrated skin, but alas, they are an unavoidable part of life. However, having well-hydrated skin can dramatically decrease their appearance. If you are seeing exaggerated wrinkles, maybe they are deeper than they usually are or popping up in places you don’t normally see them, it’s a good sign your skin is dehydrated. You can also perform a “wrinkle test” to see if you have dehydrated skin. Simply pinch your cheek and notice whether it easily wrinkles (a sign of dehydrated skin) or stays plump.

Dull Complexion

As we said at the beginning, hydrated skin is healthy skin. When skin is properly hydrated it is equipped to perform all the necessary functions of skin, including cell turnover. Cell turnover is what gives skin a healthy, glowing appearance. So if your skin is dehydrated, you’ll notice a duller, more lackluster complexion.

Dark Circles

Yes, dehydration can even cause dark circles under the eyes to be more pronounced. When skin is hydrated it is plump, however when skin is dehydrated it becomes sallow and thin. The skin underneath your eyes is already thin, so when dehydration kicks in, the purple veins beneath the surface are more visible, hence the dark circles.

Redness

Dehydrated skin can easily become irritated and sensitive. In dehydrated skin, the skin’s moisture barrier is often disrupted so it can’t properly protect the skin from irritants such as bacteria and pollution. These irritants can then penetrate the skin’s outermost layer, causing it to become red, and sometimes itchy.

Congestion

Congestion and breakouts are common results of dehydrated skin. Weakening of the skin’s moisture barrier and a lack of cell turnover means dead skin cells remain on the skin’s surface where they can clog pores and cause breakouts. Most people experiencing breakouts halt all moisturizing products, but this isn’t the answer. Repairing the skin’s moisture barrier with moisture is essential if you want to keep breakouts from recurring.

How To Fix Dehydrated Skin

The first step is to be prepared with the best products for dry skin. At the first sign of dehydrated skin, you will want to be able to address it immediately, and you can only do that if you have the right hydrating products on hand. They will quickly quench your skin’s thirst.

Gentle Cleanser

One of the worst things you can do to already dehydrated skin is to use an intense cleanser that will strip away what moisture remains. Instead, minimize how often you cleanse and use a gentle cleanser when you do.

Our restorative Milk & Honey Cleanser is specifically formulated for dry skin. It will nourish dry, dehydrated skin, help protect the skin’s barrier function, and boost moisture retention.

Exfoliant

When dead skin cells build up on the skin’s surface they can block moisture and cause breakouts. Exfoliate your skin at least once a week to clear the way for moisture and help prevent breakouts.

Try using our Gentle Refining Mask once a week, which features a unique blend of natural alpha hydroxy acids and hyaluronic acid to exfoliate the skin while soothing, brightening and hydrating it as well.

Hydrating Serum

After cleansing and exfoliating, it’s important to supply skin with hydration it can hold onto. You can do this with a hydrating serum such as our VitaRich Serum.

Our VitaRich Serum contains essential fatty acids that deliver prolonged hydration and a blend of vitamins that provide deep nourishment to the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is already present in the skin, but by adding this ingredient to your skin care routine for dry skin, you can help boost your ability to retain moisture.

A hyaluronic acid serum such as our Hyaluronic Concentrate should come next in your routine to help your skin hold onto the moisture you supplied with a hydrating serum just before. Plus, it causes skin to appear softer, firmer and more volumized.

Moisturizer

Now, it’s time to lock it all in. When you’re already noticing signs of dehydrated skin, or during the winter months, opt for a heavier moisturizer or cream.

Our PeptiDerm Moisturizing Cream, a formula rich in peptides and ceramides, will not only supply moisture but also help restore and repair the skin’s barrier so it can better retain moisture.

Mask

A hydrating mask can work wonders for dehydrated skin.

Our ReVitaLize Mask helps replenish moisture and smooth fine lines and wrinkles for firmer, more hydrated skin. On the days where you mask, do so before adding your serum, hyaluronic acid, and moisturizer to obtain the most benefits.

Moisture Mist

Keep your skin moisturized throughout the day with a hydrating facial spray such as our Moisture Mist.

Use Moisture Mist whenever your skin is in need of a hydrating boost. You can also spritz it on your face pre-serum to help increase the absorption of hydrating ingredients.

Lip Treatment

Don’t forget about your lips! Use something a little heavier than your typical lip balm, which really only provides relief for chapped lips, not treatment.

Start by sloughing away the dry skin on your lips with our Conditioning Lip Polish. Then, reach for our Redensifying Lip Complex, which features hyaluronic acid to both hydrate and plump lips over time.

Drink Water

While these hydrating skincare products will help repair skin, nothing is as good at restoring hydration and preventing dehydration as nature’s best—water. Hydrate your skin from the inside out by drinking plenty of water and eating water-rich foods. Keep in mind that any sweat-inducing workouts and beverages that contain alcohol or caffeine will further dehydrate you. Compensate by drinking even more water when these other factors are in the mix.

About Dry Skin and Its Causes

What Causes Dry Skin?

When your skin is dry, it can feel tight and itchy, be more prone to break out and look dull and flaky. All of these symptoms are signals your skin is sending you that it’s thirsty. While you can lather on all the moisturizer you want, you have to get to the root of the issue to confront it properly.

In short, dry skin is lacking the moisture it needs to function as it should. This could be because it’s not properly hydrated or it could be because the top layer of the skin is damaged and can’t retain moisture. There are a number of things that could be causing either a lack of moisture or damage to your skin’s top layer, or both.

So, what causes dry skin in the first place? We’re glad you asked. Below, we dive into the causes of dry skin, some of which may surprise you, but we wouldn’t leave you there. We’ll also show you how you can fix your dry skin depending on the cause of it so you can get to work and start seeing the healthy glow of moisturized skin sooner rather than later.

Surprising Causes of Dry Skin

1. Overwashing

We all know cleansing your skin is important, but there is such a thing as too much cleansing. Yes, this is challenging everything you ever thought about cleansing, but hear us out. The constant act of washing your face can strip it of the natural oils it needs to protect itself and stay hydrated.

How To Fix It: Focus on deep cleansing in the evening, and consider ditching the morning cleanse, or simply use an ultra-gentle cleanser in your skincare routine for dry skin such as our Sensitive Skin Cleanser in the morning. This super gentle cleanser will keep your skin’s natural oils intact.

Pro Tip: You can also “reignite” your nighttime products in the morning by simply spritzing with a Moisture Mist.

2. Harsh Cleansers

A cleanser’s job is to remove makeup, bacteria, grease, and dirt. In this fight against heavy makeup and breakout-causing bacteria, harsh cleansers are often used. The problem is, harsh cleansers, such as those containing sulfates, can’t tell the difference between your skin’s natural oils and the unnatural ones. They can easily rid your skin of even the good oils skin needs. These cleansers can also disrupt the skin barrier, leading to dryness.

How To Fix It: Swap a stripping cleanser for a hydrating one. Our Milk & Honey Cleanser gently removes impurities while nourishing dry, dehydrated skin.

3. Acne-Fighting Ingredients

Skincare is a balancing act. While your priority may be fighting acne, some of the ingredients commonly used to clarify skin can lead to skin dryness. This includes popular ingredients like salicylic acid and retinol.

How To Fix It: Consider decreasing how often you use these products. Try going from twice daily to only at night or from every night to every other night. Make sure you are also rehydrating your skin with moisturizer. The myth that oily, acne-prone skin doesn’t need moisturizer is just that—a myth. Try a calming formula such as our Sensitive Skin Moisturizer.

4. Hot Water

If you were tempted to skip over this section, we don’t blame you. Nothing feels better than an extra hot shower or a hot rinse on your face in the morning, especially in the chilly winter months. Unfortunately, the hotter the water, the worse for your skin. Hot water strips the skin’s natural oils that keep it moisturized.

How To Fix It: Consider turning the knob down to warm instead of hot at least when washing your face. Your skin will thank you.

5. Indoor Heat

It’s not just the temperature outside that can dry your skin. The temperature inside can dry skin too! Heaters decrease the humidity levels inside, causing the air to suck even more moisture from your skin.

How To Fix It: Run a humidifier at home to help restore moisture to the air in your house.

6. The Weather

Not all causes of severely dry skin are “your fault.” There are some things you can’t control i.e. the weather. When a cold front comes in, your skin can instantly feel attacked. This is because the air lacks the humidity typical in warmer months, so it pulls moisture from the skin. The cold air doesn’t help either. The combination results in dry, irritated skin.

How To Fix It: Supply your skin with extra moisture during the winter months when the elements are against it. Reach for a heavier moisturizing cream than you typically use during the summer months such as our ultra-rich PeptiDerm Moisturizing Cream. It features peptides and ceramides that are great for your skin!

Whether it’s genetics or one of these causes giving you dry skin, you can learn how to treat dry skin and get it the hydration it needs with dryness specific products. Armed with Sanitas’ best products for dry skin in your cabinet and the information above, you’ll be well equipped to both treat and prevent dry skin.

Best Products for Dry Skin

This time of year, dry skin becomes a critical concern for almost everyone. The combination of harsh winter climates, houses flooded with dry hot air, and super hot showers and baths can wreak havoc on the skin and leave it slack, flakey and lifeless. Why? Well, all of these factors irritate the skin’s natural moisture barrier and suck the moisture right out of it. This can make managing your skin problems even more difficult. Learning how to treat dry skin takes time and knowledge. At Sanitas Skincare, we’re here to help.

Needless to say, if you’re experiencing dry skin this winter, you’ll want a great solution. The good news is that a solution does exist. It lies in the powerful, hydrating ingredients inside those magic bottles on your bathroom counter.

You need more than a little moisturizer to restore your skin’s luster, though. In fact, the best products for dry skin go way beyond moisturizer. Your winning lineup needs to feature skincare ingredients known for their ability to hydrate dry skin and restore its moisture barrier. Read on to learn how to combat dry skin, whether it’s the weather’s fault or you were born with it. These hydrating ingredients and the products that feature them will make all the difference.

Best Skincare Ingredients For Dry Skin

Good skincare starts with good ingredients. While the front of a product’s packaging may tout a range of benefits, the back of the package, where the ingredient label lies, is what you should care about. It’s important to understand what ingredients a product contains to know if it is right for you and if it can make good on its promises.

Here at Sanitas Skincare, we believe that the best ingredients are those your skin can understand. This is why we use only ingredients already present in your body. Since your body is already familiar with the ingredients in our products, it knows what to do with them and how to put them quickly to work.

As we age, our body produces fewer and fewer of the things that make our skin shine, so we give it a little help by supplying more of these moisturizing ingredients via skincare products. Our powerful, pharmaceutical grade products contain clinical amounts of these naturally occurring ingredients to give you maximum results.

We also believe you should only be putting safe-for-you products on your skin, which is why we are a clean skincare company with highly concentrated ingredients. All of our ingredients are free from parabens, phthalates, dyes, harsh preservatives and gluten.

Without further ado, let us introduce you to the best skincare ingredients for dry skin and how they work their magic:

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a moisture-binding humectant that volumizes, smooths, and retexturizes the skin. The compound, which is present naturally in the body, holds water inside the skin, keeping it from evaporating. It’s what makes skin plump and hydrated, which is why we want more of it. Thanks to these great benefits, it has become a popular ingredient in skincare products. Plus, it is great for all skin types.

Raw Honey

Another familiar ingredient, honey, boasts incredible hydrating properties and other benefits too. Honey is a natural source of phytonutrient antioxidants and enzymes that provides rich hydration and protection against the visible signs of aging.

Vitamin C

Dry skin has greater difficulty turning over skin cells and building collagen because it often lacks the hydration it needs to do so. This is where vitamin C comes in. When used in skincare products, vitamin C deeply hydrates, brightens and firms collagen depleted skin, giving it a much needed boost.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is another essential vitamin for healthy skin. This skin protective vitamin improves skin firmness, radiance and moisture retention when used in skincare products.

Sodium PCA

Sodium PCA is a natural component of skin that helps bolster moisture retention (key for dry skin), protect the acid mantle, and prevent visible signs of aging. Three claps for that.

Beta Glucan

Beta glucan is a biogenic modulator that strengthens the skin’s own protective barrier to help fortify the skin. The skin’s barrier needs strength to retain moisture and this ingredient can help it build those muscles.

Milk Proteins

Milk is an ingredient you’re probably familiar with, but may not know what it can do for your skin. Milk proteins are made up of a gentle, nutritive blend of amino acids and enzymes that enhance skin hydration and help lock in long term moisture.

Ceramides

Ceramides are a reparative blend of skin identical lipids that moisturize and help plump and strengthen the skin’s barrier. A stronger skin barrier means better moisture retention and that means more hydrated skin for you!

Peptides

Dry skin is more prone to show signs of aging, which is why we developed our Age Defense Peptide Complex: a blend of age arresting peptides that helps improve elasticity, relax fine lines and wrinkles and inhibit the signs of aging.

Amino
Acids

Our Amino Acid Complex is another proprietary blend of amino acids that provides hydration, enhances the delivery of active ingredients, and supports collagen depleted skin. It’s ideal for anyone fighting dry skin.

Botanical Hydration Complex

Our Botanical Hydration Complex is an optimized lipid blend you won’t find anywhere else. It fortifies the skin barrier to maintain skin hydration.

Skin Barrier
Complex

The all-important skin barrier that helps skin retain moisture is fortified with our Skin Barrier Complex made up of skin identical occlusive lipids that lock in moisture and protect the skin.

Best Skincare Products For Dry Skin

While you can get some of these moisturizing ingredients right off the shelf, they work their best magic when formulated in clinical dosages by chemists, or skincare magicians if you want to call them that. The best skincare products for dry skin feature the powerful ingredients above. You can find all these ingredients in Sanitas Skincare and say goodbye to the negative side effects of dry skin for good.

Gentle Cleanser

A gentle cleanser will rid dry skin of any impurities without stripping its moisture barrier. Our restorative Milk & Honey Cleanser is specifically formulated for dry skin with milk proteins, natural honey, and hyaluronic acid. It will nourish dry, dehydrated skin, help protect the skin’s barrier function, and boost moisture retention.

Hydrating Serum

A Serum is an essential step in any skincare routine to supply skin with all the nutrients it needs. For dry skin, in particular, a hydrating serum is essential. That’s why we created our Antioxidant Moisturizer, which deeply nourishes to help minimize fine lines and wrinkles and leaves skin plumper, firmer and brighter.

Don’t be afraid to double up on serum when your skin is thirsty. Add our Hyaluronic Concentrate serum to your routine as well to boost the effectiveness of all your other hydrating products. It features the beneficial ingredient hyaluronic acid and amino acids too.

Meant-For-You Moisturizer

Get everything your dry skin needs out of a hydrating moisturizer with Topical C, a deeply moisturizing and reparative balm. This product features vitamins C and D, and our skin barrier complex to address severely dry skin and the visible signs of aging to boot. When you feel like you need a heavy-duty solution, reach for our PeptiDerm Moisturizing Cream instead, which is an intensive moisturizer formulated with our age defense peptide complex and ceramides.

Mask

A moisturizing mask delivers a potent dose of hydration that is extremely beneficial to add to your skincare routine for dry skin when you have the time. Our VitaRich Mask, in particular, imparts deep hydration to replenish dry, dull skin. It contains a targeted blend of essential fatty acids and nourishing vitamins, combined with powerful humectants (hyaluronic acid), to help preserve skin hydration and accelerate skin renewal. In just 15 minutes your skin will be moisturized, soft, and smooth. Now, that’s magic.

Hydrating Mist

Hydration doesn’t have to happen only in the morning and in the evening. Adding a hydrating mist to your routine, or throwing it in your bag to take on-the-go will help your skin stay moisturized all day long. Our Moisture Mist is formulated with hyaluronic acid (that magic ingredient again), beta glucan, and sodium PCA to help soften and smooth dehydrated skin. It’s perfect for setting makeup or as a light skin refresher throughout the day.

While these products are great for anyone with regularly dry skin, they are also great for anyone battling seasonal dryness. Either way, when you have the lineup on your shelf, dry skin and its pesky symptoms won’t see the light of day.
